Protect Undocumented Californians From ICE Data Brokers - Stop AB1416

A horrific proposed bill, AB1416, would prevent Californians from being able to stop the sale of their personal information under the new privacy law if the company is selling the information to the government.

Any agency of the government. Including ICE.

One of the biggest supporters of the bill is Thomson Reuters, the huge Canadian-based multinational corporation with long-term contracts to sell personally identifying information culled from public and private records to ICE.

A sole source contract issued to Thomson Reuters in 2018 from ICE says: "ICE relies on continuous access to commercial database aggregators. Information from Thomson Reuters helps to leverage emerging technology to ensure that ICE can continue to expand its information database coverage nationwide in a cost-effective manner."

California's Consumer Privacy Act would let Californians send an opt-out request to Thomson Reuters instructing them not to sell their information - to ICE or to anyone else.

AB 1416 wants to take that right away.

The bill could hit the floor as soon as Wednesday

I am writing today as a resident of Northern California to insist that California keep our promise to our undocumented friends and neighbors of safety from Trump and ICE. Assembly Bill 1416 is supported by ICE data broker Thomson Reuters, a Canadian information services company that aggregates personally identifying information from public and private sources and sells it to Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The sole source contract awarded by ICE to Thomson Reuters in March of 2018 states: "Thomson Reuters databases help to leverage technology that ensures that ICE can continue to expand its database information coverage nationwide in a cost-effective manner.". The California Consumer Privacy Act lets Californians to opt out of having their personal data sold by ICE data brokers by sending a company like Thomson Reuters an opt out request. But Assembly Bill 1416 will prevent consumers from being able to opt out of if the data sale is to *any* government agency for the purpose of carrying out *any* government program. The Legislature spoke up loud and clear when it passed the California Values Act to protect undocumented Californians from the ICE reign of terror. Please do not go back on that promise now. Let Californians choose to protect themselves from data brokers. Stop Assembly Bill 1416.
